Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve Gastrectomy involves laparoscopically removing the left side of the stomach to decrease the volume from about 30-40 oz to 3-4 oz.
The Sleeve Gastrectomy causes weight loss by two mechanisms:
- The small tubular stomach causes restriction, which limits food intake. Restriction leads to early satiety (fullness) with much smaller meal portions.
- There are hormones involved in hunger that are produced by the removed portion of the stomach. After a Sleeve Gastrectomy these hormone levels are drastically reduced which leads to a similar drop in hunger.
The result is typically excellent weight loss -- on average 70-75% of excess weight.
Additionally, Sleeve Gastrectomy has fewer long-term risks, and is generally an easier operation to live with than other weight loss surgeries.
